Leave a message movie editor Aaron Lieber
Interview with "Leave a Message" filmmaker Aaron Lieber

I called Aaron Lieber to know everything about this amazing film named "Leave a Message".

Here are his answers, check it out, the revolution is already on...

How did you first met with Jason Kenworthy ?

I first met Jason on a surf trip to Tahiti. I was making my first film, The Pursuit, and I think Jason was asked by one of the surfers on the trip to come shoot photos. He decided to come on the trip and that’s how we first met.

How is born Leave a Message project ?

Leave A Message was a Jason Kenworthy creation. He started the project with Nikes previous filmer Lucas Wimer.

Then I took over Lucas position and finished the project with Jason. But, Jason created the project because he was so impressed with the progressive surfing of Carissa Moore, Laura Enever, and Malia Manuel.

No one has ever made a high performance women’s surf film of this caliber before. Jason is a guru for seeing talent and making things happen so for him it was simple math, these girls were surfing amazing and he felt the world needed to see it and 2 years later Leave A message is done.

What was the main difficulty on the movie ?

The most difficult part of making the film was getting good waves and working with all the athletes’ schedules. Everyone is so busy these days that it's hard to have time to film and then when you do have time it's hard to get good waves.

So, how long did it take to make the film ?

2 years

How did you select the apearences order of the girls ?

Well Carissa is current World number 1 and we felt her section was the strongest so hers was saved for last. The order of the rest of the sections were based on similar criteria but more to just make sure the movie had a good flow.

Who impressed you the most on those trips ?

I think Lakey Peterson impressed me the most. She is so young and has so much raw talent. You never know what she is going to do on a wave.

How did you select the different locations for the movie ?

Locations were selected based on time of year and where we had the best chance of getting good waves.

Michel Bourez is on the movie as games referee ?

Ya a lot of the trips were a mix of the boys and girls on Nike 6.0. So Michel Bourez just got in on the mix of the games.

How did you dispatch work with Jason Kenworthy ?

Well this is Jason’s project. He directed it. So he was in charge of all the major decisions planning the trips and all that sort of stuff. I just did anything and everything he asked me to.

Who decided to put the video on free download ?

Nike decides that stuff. But we made the film to show the world how good these girls surf so we wanted to make sure we maximized the exposure.

Who decided of the title ?

Damion Triplett from Nike 6.0 decided the title of the film.

How did you convinced Nike to make this movie ?

In addition to being the Director of the Film Jason Kenworthy is also Nike’s surf mentor and it's his job to tell Nike what projects would be good to do. So he came up with the idea and made it happen.

Finally, What is the message ?

Leave A Message is an open ended we want the viewers to decide.
